A facelift procedure has long been the ultimate in facial rejuvenation treatments. While there are now many procedures available on today’s market to help combat the common signs of aging, from topical treatments to injectables, no other treatment is as comprehensive and effective as the facelift surgery. The facelift procedure may often be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as the browlift, eyelid lift or neck lift to complete the transformation. North Coast Plastic Surgery is proud to offer amazing facelift results for our patients in San Diego.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift or a rhytidectomy is a cosmetic procedure that can help you get a younger appearance. During the procedure, the surgeon will work on reducing the folds of skin on the cheeks and sagging skin and making changes that contours the shape of the face.

The shape and appearance of your face change as you grow older. These are normal changes that happen to everyone. Your skin becomes looser and less elastic and the fat deposits increase in certain areas of the face and decrease in others. With the facelift procedure, you can reduce these age-related changes and maintain a youthful appearance. A facelift procedure can help you with the following:

  • Excess skin at the jowls or the lower jawline
  • Sagging appearance of the cheeks
  • Excess fat and sagging skin in the neck (by combining the facelift and the neck lift procedure)
  • Deepening the skin fold from the corner of the mouth to the side of the nose

What to Expect

During the facelift procedure, a skin flap from each side of your face will be pulled back and tissues present under your skin will be surgically altered so that your face contour can be returned to a youthful shape. Before suturing the flap close, the surgeon will also remove the excess skin. It is important to note that a facelift cannot decrease wrinkles and fine creases in your skin or reverse damage caused by sun exposure. You will need other cosmetic procedures to address these issues.

Recovering from a Facelift

Once the facelift procedure is completed, you might experience some swelling, pain, bruising, drainage from the incisions, and numbness. All of these are completely normal and you don’t have to worry about them. Your incisions will be covered with bandages to provide gentle pressure and minimize bruising and swelling. Make sure that for a few days after the surgery, you rest with an elevated head. If you are feeling pain, you can apply cool packs.
