Breast augmentation, which is also known as augmentation mammaplasty or breast enlargement, is a procedure that can help to improve your self-esteem and confidence by giving your breasts attractive curves, fullness, and an enhanced shape and size. You may also find that clothing that may not have fit well before will now complement your new figure. During your consultation at North Coast Plastic Surgery you will find there are a variety of methods with which to achieve your desired appearance. Some of the most common include saline-filled breast implants, silicone-filled implants, cohesive gel (“gummy bear”) implants, and fat transfer.

Step 1: Choosing your implant size and style

Besides choosing the right Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, the implant size and style that you decide upon is one of the most important choices you will have to make. Sizing at North Coast Plastic Surgery is determined not only with the help of our Mentor sizing system, but also based on your breast measurements at the time of your consultation. Our trained nursing staff and I will help in guiding you in making safe, reasonable choices when deciding which implant size and style to use for your breast augmentation surgery.

Step 2: Your Incision

Depending on which breast implant you choose and your body type, your incisions may differ. All incisions are designed to be as unnoticeable as possible. Some of these incisions include inframammary incisions, transaxillary, transumbilical, and periareolar. Inframammary incisions are underneath the breast while transaxillary incisions are close to the armpit. The transumbilical incision is for saline implants only and is located at the navel. Lastly, perioareolar incisions are made around the edge of the areola. A discussion during your consultation about the various incisions will help you to determine what is best for you.

Step 3: Inserting your implant

After making the incisions, pockets for your breast implant are created either above the muscle or below. The pocket choice is determined during your consultation at North Coast Plastic Surgery

Step 4: Your results

After your surgery, your results will be immediate. You will experience some swelling and discoloration from bruising, however this vanishes shortly after surgery. All other swelling should disappear within a month’s time. The first two to three days after the surgery is usually the most uncomfortable, but after that time most of your pain will improve.

Post surgery care will be discussed and provided prior to your surgery. Your results should be long lasting, but you will still have multiple follow ups to ensure that you are doing well.
