Excess tissue in the male chest can cause the appearance of “man boobs.” As teenagers, boys experiencing this issue are subject to mockery that can bring their self-confidence down and negatively affect their social life.

Men with male breasts may become self-conscious about intimacy, start to avoid certain physical activities, and disappear from their social life to hide the condition. To correct the issue of man boobs, people often come in for male breast-reduction surgery.

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the condition of having excess tissue in the chest that creates the look of male breasts. It can be unilateral or bilateral, meaning that it can affect both breasts or a single breast. It can occur at any age as a result of heredity, obesity, hormonal changes, or certain medications.

Gynecomastia is characterized by the following:
• Excess fat localized in the chest area
• Excess glandular breast tissue
• Excess breast skin

What Is Male Breast-Reduction Surgery?

Male breast-reduction surgery is a cosmetic procedure used to restore a naturally masculine appearance to a man’s chest. It is an ideal choice for men who would like to reduce their breast size and flatten and contour their chests.

In some cases, the excess weight of the breast tissue may affect the dark skin surrounding the nipple, called the areola. With gynecomastia, the size of the areola can be reduced surgically by removing the excess skin.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate?

Every man with male breasts is an ideal candidate for male breast-reduction surgery if:
• He is a non-smoker and does not take drugs.
• He is physically healthy and at a stable weight.
• His breast development has stabilized.
• His condition cannot be treated with alternative medical treatments.
• He does not have any life-threatening illnesses.
• He does not have a bleeding condition or any medical disorder that can impair healing.
• He is not allergic to anesthesia.

Male Breast-Reduction Surgery: The Procedure

Male breast-reduction surgery starts with a consultation with Dr. Park. He will review the patient’s medical history, present medical conditions, medications being taken, and allergies in order to decide whether the patient is an ideal candidate for the treatment.

Dr. Park discusses the incision site, number of incisions, type of incisions, and ideal chest dimensions, then arranges a date for the procedure.

During the procedure, the patient is administered general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation depending on the treatment plan. Dr. Park then makes the necessary incisions.

After incisions are made, he may use liposuction to remove the excess fat from the breast. Excess skin and glandular breast tissues are removed with a scalpel. The areolae are repositioned to create more masculine contours. Finally, the skin is redraped and the incisions are closed with the help of surgical sutures.

The patient is given post-surgery care directions to follow and should do so as closely as possible. This will ensure quality results and a more comfortable healing process overall.
