Lip augmentation also referred to as lip enhancement, provides a way to give your lips the fuller appearance and more attractive shape that you have always wanted. At North Coast Plastic Surgery, we offer lip augmentation using dermal fillers or fat transfer. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Greg Park can go over each option to determine which one is the right choice for your lip augmentation in San Diego.
Candidates for Lip Augmentation
The lips are an important and prominent feature of every face. They are essential for verbal communication and non-verbal cues through facial expressions. In addition, the size, shape, and volume of an individual’s lips can influence how one is perceived by others. Some people decide to undergo lip augmentation for fuller lips because they feel that this will enhance their overall attractiveness and beauty. Others may feel that their lips have lost volume resulting in thinner lips with the formation of lip lines and wrinkles as they have become older. In this situation, patients are looking to rejuvenate and restore the shape, fullness, and smooth contours of their lips.
How is Lip Augmentation Performed?
Lip augmentation to create fuller, more attractive lips can be accomplished using dermal fillers, such as Juvederm Ultra or Juvederm Ultra Plus. Fillers add more volume to the lips through injections done in our office. Numbing medication is applied to the lips and blunt cannulas are used to inject the fillers.
Use of blunt cannulas helps to minimize discomfort, swelling and bruising after the procedure. Any redness or swelling will subside over the next day or so. After the injections, there is no downtime and lip stick can be applied right after the procedure. The fillers may last up to 6 months, sometimes longer. Maintenance treatments can be performed periodically to help maintain your results for as long as desired.
Autologous fat transfer is a surgery for patients who desire a permanent solution for their lip augmentation. With this surgical procedure, fat is harvested from one part of the body and transferred to the lips. When this is done, the lips are generally overfilled and will appear excessively swollen for 3 weeks before recovering and settling into a more youthful, fuller shape.
Since this option is more invasive than dermal fillers and requires the use of liposuction to harvest fat, the recovery time is longer. Expect at least a couple of days to a week of downtime. But, in the long run there may be no need for any additional lip injections to maintain your augmented lips.
The Cost of Lip Augmentation
The cost of your lip augmentation in San Diego will be determined by several factors like the techniques used and the amount of dermal filler needed. During your consultation, Dr. Park can go over the benefits of both dermal fillers and fat transfer for lip augmentation as well as the expected cost of each option to help determine the right choice for you. Our team will also let you know about the financing and payment options available to you.
