Cosmetic nose surgery in Oceanside & San Diego
Noses come in all shapes and sizes. Some people are born with what may be considered a beautiful nose. On the other hand, some may have a nose that shows a particular trait or history of trauma that makes their nose less attractive in their eyes. A Rhinoplasty often referred to as a nose job is performed to change the shape and size of the tip or bridge of the nose, narrow or reduce the size of the nostrils, or change the angle between the upper lip and the bottom portion of the nose. These artistic surgical steps can dramatically change not only the nose but the balance and proportion of the face after rhinoplasty. In some cases, breathing difficulties through the nose are addressed and improved at the time of your nose surgery, as well.
Before surgery, this rhinoplasty patient has a large, slightly hanging nose, with a hump and an enlarged tip.
After surgery, the patient has a smaller nose, a straighter bridge, a well-defined nasal tip, and an improved angle between the nose and upper lip.

Surgery to improve an obstructed airway requires careful evaluation of the nasal structure. Correction of a deviated septum, one of the most common causes of breathing impairment, is achieved by adjusting the nasal structure to produce better alignment.
In addition, the best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking for improvement in their aesthetic appearance. Patients who are trying to have their noses made look like that of their favorite celebrity may have expectations that cannot be met.
Patients may also require nose surgery to repair deformities caused by trauma or birth defects or to improve functional breathing difficulties. These concerns will be addressed at the time of your consultation.
Age is another factor to consider. Once facial growth has been completed, generally around 14 to 15 years of age for girls, and a little bit older for boys, teenagers could be offered surgery for improvement in the appearance and/or function of their nose.
Dr. Gregory Park has extensive training and experience in both Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, as well as Plastic Surgery which, enables him to address both the functional and the cosmetic issues of your Rhinoplasty Surgery.

Your Rhinoplasty Surgery Consultation
Clear communication is key for a successful cosmetic rhinoplasty. Be prepared to express why you are interested in rhinoplasty and what you would like surgery to achieve. Disclosure of your health history is important, especially a history of previous nose surgery, medications, medical issues, recreational drug use, and tobacco use.
During your consultation, your nose will be examined, inside and out. Surgical details will be discussed. Factors such as the shape of the nasal bones and cartilage, the nasal skin thickness, and the balance between your nose and face will be evaluated and noted. All of these factors will ultimately influence your postoperative results.
Preparing For Your Surgery
Before your surgery, Dr. Park and his nurses will see you at your preoperative appointment. During this appointment, you will get another opportunity to ask any additional questions you may have about surgery and review all the details of the surgery again.
You will be provided with prescriptions for medications required after surgery. You will also be provided with instructions to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on drinking, eating, smoking, and avoiding certain medications or supplements.
While preparing for surgery, make sure to make arrangements to have a family member or friend drive you home after surgery. You may also want to have someone help you for a couple of days while you recover.
Your Rhinoplasty Surgery
Local anesthesia or general anesthesia can be used to facilitate your rhinoplasty. The type of anesthesia depends on the extent and length of time for the surgery and your level of comfort.
With the use of local anesthesia, you will be sedated with oral or IV medications, and your nose and the surrounding area will be numbed. During surgery, you will be awake, but relaxed and insensitive to pain. With general anesthesia, you will be asleep during the entire procedure.
Nose surgery may take about one to several hours depending on the complexity of the surgery.
When surgery involves the reduction of a prominent hump, incisions are made on the inside of the nose. Sometimes an incision is made along the bottom portion of the nose, known as the columella, to expose the cartilage framework of the nose. This “open” approach facilitates the shaping of the tip of the nose.
Once surgery has been completed, a splint is placed on the nose to protect and maintain your new nasal shape while healing.

After Your Rhinoplasty Surgery
Following surgery, it is normal to experience some discomfort. Medications will be prescribed to alleviate any aches or pain. Expect some nasal drainage for a day or two, congestion for at least a week, and bruising and swelling around the eyes for a couple of weeks. After about a week your nasal splint will be removed, as well as any stitches.
Getting Back to Normal
Everyday activities may be resumed in a day or two. After about a week or so you will be able to return to school or a desk job.
There are some strenuous activities to avoid for two to three weeks, such as running, swimming, weight lifting, and sexual relations. It is important to avoid any direct contact with the nose for about 8 weeks. If you participate in any contact sports, especially sports like martial arts, you might want to reconsider undergoing a rhinoplasty until you have stopped participating in such activities.
You can start wearing contact lenses right after surgery, but the use of glasses can potentially depress your nasal bones. After the splint is removed, you will need to avoid direct contact with your nose with your glasses for at least six weeks, until the nasal bones are fully healed.
Your New Look
Following surgery, you will experience some bruising and swelling around your nose, eyes, and cheeks. This is all part of the healing process. After a week or so, you will look better.
Remember, your nose will heal gradually and slowly. Some patients may feel that there is not a significant difference in the appearance of their nose after rhinoplasty, especially if subtle changes were made to the tip of the nose during surgery. But, be patient. Mild to moderate swelling may be present for months. In some cases, it may take a year or more for the final results of your nose surgery to be apparent.
How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?
