Liposuction San Diego
Liposuction is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. This is not a method for weight loss, but a surgical way of removing localized fat.
Liposuction In Oceanside & San Diego
The word “fat” may conjure up unpleasant thoughts of our body image. Although a necessity for life and a vital system for energy storage, unfortunately no one can choose where to accumulate their fat deposits. There are some positive aspects of visible fat that include making the skin appear soft and smooth, and providing the breasts and buttocks with volume and fullness. However, in the more negative light, we may visualize contour irregularities, dimpling, a bulging tummy, back rolls and folds, or disproportionate “pear shaped” bust to hip ratios.
Liposuction’s main goal is to contour the body. By sculpting and removal of unwanted fat deposits in specified areas via liposuction your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Gregory Park, aesthetically contours and targets such specific areas such as the cheeks, chin, neck, chest, back, arms, tummy, hips, thighs, buttocks, knees, calves, and ankles. Liposuction can also be an alternative to the more invasive surgeries with less scarring in procedures such as enlarged male breasts or gynecomastia.
Women may have liposuction performed under the chin, on their hips, thighs, and stomach, and in the under arm and breast area.
For men, common sites include under the chin and around the waist. Liposuction may also be used in the reduction of enlarged male breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia.
Healthy, normal-weight people with elastic skin and pockets of excess fat are good candidates for surgery.
The best candidates for liposuction are of normal weight with localized areas of excess fat– for example, in the buttocks, hips, and thighs.
The surgeon inserts a cannula through small incisions in the skin. At the other end of the tube is a vacuum-pressure unit that suctions off the fat.
A snug compression garment worn after surgery helps reduce swelling.

Scheduling your consultation with Dr. Park is the first step on the path to sculpting your body with liposuction. An assessment of skin tone, elasticity, shape, and proportion all go into how Dr. Park can achieve your cosmetic needs. Liposuction, also known as liposculpting, can be performed in various ways. Dr. Park takes time in educating his patients in all the types of liposuction that can be performed and which would be best for your particular body part in need of contour improvements.
Patients can often find the market of liposuction to be overwhelming with the large number of options and techniques available. Dr. Park will take the time to provide information for the best liposuction options for your body type. These types may include traditional, “super wet” tumescent, and laser assisted liposuction.
Basic liposuction techniques are used in all patients undergoing this surgery. However, over the course of time, the procedure has been modified and refined, with the introduction of several variations.
Fluid (tumescent) Injection: uses a local anesthetic solution that numbs the treatment area and contracts blood vessels which helps the fat to be removed more easily. Tumescent fluid injection also helps to reduce the amount of bruising after surgery.
The super-wet technique is similar to the tumescent technique, except that lesser amounts of fluid are used. Usually the amount of fluid injected is equal to the amount of fat to be removed. This technique often requires IV sedation or general anesthesia.
Laser-Assisted Liposuction uses heat to melt the fat and also tighten the skin as the fat is suctioned.
Liposuction can be done alone for contouring or in tandem with other surgeries. Facelifts are often enhanced by liposuctioning the pockets of fat from under the chin. Other purposes of liposuction could be to contour a particular area of the body, while at the same time collecting that fat for transfer to the breasts for a natural augmentation, the buttocks for a Brazilian butt lift, or the face for a more permanent volume solution compared to expensive facial filler injections.
Be sure to clearly communicate with Dr. Park what your goals and desires are for your body contour, and he will provide you with an honest opinion on what can be achieved and improved through cosmetic liposuction surgery. Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate for liposuction, as it is not a replacement for proper diet and exercise. If Dr. Park determines that liposuction is not appropriate to meet your plastic surgical goals, there may be alternative surgeries such as a face or neck lift, arm lift, tummy tuck that would fulfill your needs.
Preparing For Your Surgery
Before your surgery, Dr. Park and his nurses will see you at your preoperative appointment. During this appointment you will get another opportunity to ask any additional questions you may have with regard to surgery and review all the details of surgery again.
You will be provided with prescriptions for medications required after surgery. You will also be provided with instructions to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on drinking, eating, smoking, and avoiding certain medications or supplements.
The surgery itself can vary anywhere from 1-4 hours depending on areas to be contoured and the amount of fat to be removed. Expect a general anesthetic or twilight sedation which provide Dr. Park with the time he needs to sculpt and mold your new body shape while you are comfortably asleep or sedated. In some cases when surgery plans for a small amount of fat is removal, local anesthesia along with tumescent fluid may be used to perform surgery while lightly sedated or fully awake.
Once you are positioned comfortably small 3 to 4 mm incisions are made so that a hollow metal tube or liposuction cannula can be inserted and used to remove a portion of the fat layer that lies below the surface of the skin. If several sites are being treated, your surgeon will then move on to the next area, working to keep the incisions as inconspicuous as possible.
Once your surgery has been completed, you nurses in the recovery room will assist you into your compression garments and begin reviewing the post-operative teaching with you and your caregiver.
After Your Surgery
Expect some drainage of tumescent fluid from your incisions the first night. You should plan to have assistance for the first 24-48 hours after your surgery. You will be required to wear your compression garment 24/7 for about 2 weeks post-operatively. These should be snug and not excessively tight to assist with the shaping and contouring as well as reducing swelling.
After a week or so you will start to feel better. You may be able to return to work after a couple of days as long as your job doesn’t require a lot of strenuous activities.
It is important to walk minimally to keep your blood circulating in your legs to prevent any blood clots from forming after surgery. We recommend that you not work out for 4 weeks after your surgery. Do not take aspirin or other blood thinning medications and do not drive nor operate heavy machinery while under the influence of narcotic pain medication.
You will have several follow up visits to check on the progress of your healing. Should you have any questions or concerns always feel free to call Dr. Park. He is happy to take care of his patient in any capacity for optimal post-operative care.
The changes to the shape of your body will be visible after surgery even with the early postoperative swelling. Your improvements will become even better after 4 to 6 weeks when the majority of the swelling resolves. After 3 to 4 months any residual swelling usually dissipates, revealing your final shape and contour.
The benefits of liposuction will be the improvements in the way you look and feel about your body with and without your new clothes. However, maintaining your new shape will require a lifestyle of healthy foods and regular exercise.
